Once we got to Auckland we decided to stay at that very same freedom camping spot we had stayed at a couple of days before. The ferry to Auckland left right from the lot where we parked with our camper which made it the ideal spot.
April 5, 2018 – Port Albert, New Zealand
Our journey through New Zealand continued as we drove down the narrow and winding road that led us off the Coromandel Peninsula. It was the Thursday before Easter and a never-ending line of cars was driving on the Peninsula for the long weekend – lucky us!
March 29, 2018 – Kuaotunu, New Zealand
One more thing that had not been on our schedule initially was the Coromandel Peninsula. Yet with some extra time on the North Island we got the chance to also visit this beautiful part of New Zealand.
March 27, 2018 – Rotorua, New Zealand
The day we spent at Lake Taupo was one of those that are just too good to be true. We did nothing particularly special and even opted out on visiting some nearby waterfalls in favor of sitting by the lake on a blanket, playing and laughing with Levi (which is the best thing to do anyways).
March 25, 2018 – Napier, New Zealand
Wellington was cloudy and cold when we visited. At least it wasn’t pouring any more as it had during the night so we decided to walk into the city center. We visited the famous Te Papa Museum which we thought was alright and explored the downtown area and the Cuba Street night market. At the end of the day we had walked 19km, pushed a stroller for 19km, carried Levi for probably 8km and fell asleep more than tired.

We took a day to just drive from the west to the east coast. We had planned to stop in between initially but everything was running so smoothly on that day that we just continued driving.

When we got to Wanaka in the morning it was packed with hundreds of people. Who knows what they were all doing there. We opted on visiting a local Lavender farm (my cousin from Canada knows the wife of the owner, unfortunately she wasn’t there when we visited) which was super relaxing and the place was beautifully set and decorated.

We left Southland and arrived in Te Anau on a beautiful and sunny day that offered stunning views of Lake Te Anau and its surrounding mountains.
March 12, 2018 – Te Anau, New Zealand
A change of plans brought us all the way down South to the Catlins. It was Joe’s idea to take the longer, scenic route instead of just driving to Te Anau from Dunedin directly and was that ever a good thought! We experienced New Zealand just like one imagines it. Lush, green hills and valleys with thousands of peacefully grazing sheep. Steep cliffs and rough, impressive beaches. An incredible nature and other than that nothing much. Not even cell phone coverage or internet in many parts (and here is the reason why I didn’t post anything for days).
