The day we spent at Lake Taupo was one of those that are just too good to be true. We did nothing particularly special and even opted out on visiting some nearby waterfalls in favor of sitting by the lake on a blanket, playing and laughing with Levi (which is the best thing to do anyways).

We found a freedom camping spot later on, right next to Lake Taupo and took an afternoon swim in the crystal clear water while we watched parachuters jumping off an airplane right above us. The sun set behind the Lake covered in gold and revealed a sky full of stars. Almost too good to be true.

The area around Lake Taupo and Rotorua offers dozens of possibilities to see geothermal activities. We chose the Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland where we saw different colorful, hot and muddy pools. The ground was steaming and the air smelled like rotten eggs, quite an impressive experience and certainly a ‚must-do‘ in that area. Later that day we explored Kuirau Park in Rotorua where you can find geothermal areas right in the park (for free!). You can even dip your feet in a thermal pool and enjoy the hot water. If you want to save 33$ per adult, the park is a great option without missing out on anything!
