March 7, 2018 – Dunedin, New Zealand
We’ve been on the road with our camper for almost a week and we love it. It’s a huge vehicle and there’s plenty of room for our little family. The renting process has been a struggle (we had to wait five hours until our camper was ready although we had specifically booked it for 8am…) and it took us a good day to get settled but now we can’t imagine anything better for the next weeks.
We drove along Lake Tekapo with its stunning light steel blue color. We stopped at Lake Mc Gregor for the night and drove up to Mount John in the morning. Levi played in the water at Lake Pukaki right in front of Mount Cook and we saw the brightest and clearest starry sky we have ever seen at White Horse Hill Campground. The 10km hike up Hooker Valley to see Aoraki (Mount Cook) was cold, windy and foggy but we enjoyed it anyways.
Once we got to Oamaru we were lucky enough to see one of the rare yellow eyed penguins at Bushy Beach. That night we did freedom camping and fell asleep with the sound of the ocean waves. We awoke to a stunning sunset right at the beach and strolled around Oamaru’s beautiful Harbour Street. Further South we saw the impressive Moeraki Boulder at the Beach before continuing on to Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula.
